CBS News has acknowledged declining public trust and announced an editorial reset for its flagship evening broadcast as it prepares to relaunch under new leadership next week.

In a video posted January 1 by the official CBS Evening News account, anchor Tony Dokoupil said the network had too often failed to reflect the experiences and concerns of ordinary Americans and pledged greater accountability and transparency in its coverage. The post drew roughly 10 million views on X within a day, according to the platform’s public metrics.

“On too many stories, the press has missed the story. Because we’ve taken into account the perspective of advocates and not the average American. Or we put too much weight in the analysis of academics or elites, and not enough on you. That changes now,” the CBS Evening News account wrote, announcing the broadcast will debut Monday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.

In the video, Dokoupil said distrust in the media has been building for decades, citing coverage of trade policy, foreign conflicts, COVID lockdowns, Hunter Biden’s laptop, and questions about the President’s fitness for office.

“You come first, not advertisers, not politicians, not corporate interests,” Dokoupil said, adding that the promise extends to CBS’s corporate ownership.

The announcement follows leadership changes at CBS News, including the October hiring of Bari Weiss as editor in chief. Weiss has said her mandate is to restore credibility and emphasize fairness, though some early decisions have drawn criticism.

Reacting to the January 1 post, Stella Escobedo, a former CBS journalist who now works independently, wrote on X: “Having spent years inside a CBS newsroom, I can tell you this shift didn’t happen by accident. It happened because independent journalists — many of whom left mainstream media — forced conversations legacy outlets avoided. @bariweiss deserves credit for challenging the groupthink.”

CBS News has faced scrutiny predating the current overhaul.

In February 2025, the Federal Communications Commission opened a formal docket seeking public comment on a news distortion complaint tied to the editing of a “60 Minutes” interview with then–Vice President Kamala Harris.

The complaint, filed by the Center for American Rights, alleged that the segment aired on WCBS in New York had been deceptively edited. CBS provided the FCC with unedited transcripts and footage, and the commission said it was opening the proceeding to promote transparency and public participation.

More recently, Weiss has faced blowback for pulling a “60 Minutes” segment examining conditions inside a Salvadoran prison housing Venezuelan migrants deported by the Trump administration.

Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi wrote to colleagues that the story had cleared legal and editorial review and argued that shelving it amounted to a political decision.

Weiss said the piece lacked sufficient context and administration response and would air when ready, per The Hill.

Media critics have also questioned whether the appointment of Dokoupil represents a true break from the past. A Poynter op-ed recently argued the choice signals continuity rather than disruption, even as CBS insists the tone and priorities of the broadcast will change.

Dokoupil, who will officially take the anchor chair on January 5, said he intends to step away from the desk and meet viewers across the country in his first month, framing the effort as part of a renewed commitment to listening.

The repositioning aligns with reporting approaches long emphasized by The Dallas Express, which has focused its coverage on accountability-driven journalism and challenging elite-driven narratives shaping national media discourse.
