The FBI is reportedly following the lead of a far-left group as it investigates alleged threats against Colorado Supreme Court justices following former president Donald Trump’s disqualification from the state’s presidential ballot.

The group, called Advance Democracy, has begun monitoring social media users who have taken issue with the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling that Trump should not appear on the state’s ballots, reported MSNBC.

Advance Democracy is a “public interest research organization” headed up by Daniel J. Jones. Jones’ organizations have worked with Fusion GPS, a research firm that commissioned the notorious Steele dossier filled with allegations that became the basis of the Trump-Russia collusion accusation, per Influence Watch.

Advance Democracy has compiled a new report claiming that Trump supporters’ outrage at the ruling includes “significant violent rhetoric” against the Colorado justices who ruled against Trump, per MSNBC.

Jones told NBC News that Trump’s reaction to the ruling, including the former president’s social media posts on his Truth Social platform, was a “key driver of the violent rhetoric.” Jones said it constituted an effort to “delegitimize and politicize the actions of the courts.”

According to multiple reports, the FBI and Colorado law enforcement are investigating the threats against the justices.

The notion that the FBI might be working with a group that is viewed by many as having a strong bias against Trump is setting off alarm bells with some politicos.

Meteorologist and former Texas elected official John Basham summed up the concern, posting on X:

“BREAKING: [The FBI] Is Taking Directions From A Far Left-Wing NGO’ Advance Democracy.’ The NGO Is Searching X & Other Social Media Finding Americans Livid & Posting About The Colorado Supreme Court’s Removal Of Trump From The Ballot & The FBI Is Investigating Those Speaking Out!”

The Dallas Express reached out to the Dallas FBI office for comment regarding the agency’s investigation and was referred to the Denver FBI field office.

DX asked how closely the FBI is working with Advance Democracy, including whether the agency is using the group’s data or reports. DX also inquired whether the FBI is aware of the link between Advance Democracy and Fusion GPS, and if so, what the agency’s response is to concerns that it is collaborating with a highly partisan organization that could taint its investigation.

Vikki Migoya, a spokesperson for the branch, was only able to provide the following statement:

“The FBI is aware of the situation [regarding threats to members of the Colorado Supreme Court] and working with local law enforcement. We will vigorously pursue investigations of any threat or use of violence committed by someone who uses extremist views to justify their actions regardless of motivation.”
