Vice President Kamala Harris addressed her supporters Wednesday afternoon in a somewhat quick and somber concession speech, acknowledging her defeat in the 2024 presidential race to former- and now President-elect Donald Trump.
Harris was late to the stage Wednesday after her supporters dismissed themselves without an appearance by Harris at Howard University Tuesday night.
Harris expressed gratitude for her team’s and fellow constituents’ support in her concession speech. The current vice president conceded that the American people had chosen a different path.
“I am so proud of the race we ran and the way we ran it,” Harris said.
“The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for, but hear me when I say the light of America’s promise will always burn bright…as long as we never give up, and as long as we keep fighting,” she added.
Yet, the message from many of America’s voters, particularly in key swing states, was clear: Americans are seeking a political change.
With inflation still a major concern, rising crime, and global instability, Harris’ message of continued government expansion did not seem to connect with most American voters.
“To the young people who are watching, it is okay to feel sad or disappointed, but please know it’s okay…This is not a time to throw up our hands but to fight. Time to organize, mobilize, and stay engaged for the sake of freedom and justice, and the future you know we all can build together,” Harris told the crowd at Howard University on Wednesday afternoon.
The underlying message of Harris’ speech was quick and contrite, barely acknowledging that the left’s vision for the future was not what the country voted to support.
America is now looking to turn the page.
“Earlier today, I spoke to President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory,” Harris said. “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.”
