Elon Musk offered Friday to cancel SpaceX government contracts that Washington no longer wants, endorsing a proposed challenge to congressional Democrats to identify which deals should go.

“Happy to cancel any that the government doesn’t want. Just say the word!” Musk wrote in a November 6 post on X.

His response backed a post by X user Warren Redlich, who suggested Musk ask House and Senate Democrats to identify contracts for cancellation and obtain any required agency consent. Redlich framed the proposal as a response to Democratic criticism of federal contracts going to Musk’s companies.

Musk opened his response with “Exactly 😂” and projected that government revenue would account for less than 10% of SpaceX’s revenue this quarter and less than 5% a year from now.

His post did not provide a financial breakdown, identify a specific contract to terminate or announce a completed cancellation.

SpaceX’s price argument

Musk argued that SpaceX’s government contracts deliver both the best product and the lowest price.

NASA’s original commercial crew awards offer one historical price comparison. The agency announced maximum contract values of $2.6 billion for SpaceX and $4.2 billion for Boeing on September 16, 2014. The fixed-price contracts covered development, certification, a crewed test flight and up to six operational crewed missions per company to the International Space Station.

Those figures represent the initial award ceilings, not current contract totals. SpaceX’s NASA work includes transporting astronauts to the station, including the Crew-4 mission in 2022, as The Dallas Express previously reported.

EV purchase credits ended in 2025

Musk also said Tesla has no government contracts and pointed to President Donald Trump’s ending of federal EV incentives.

Federal tax credits for new, used and commercial clean vehicles do not apply to vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, the IRS confirms. Qualifying buyers who signed a binding contract and made a payment by that deadline could still claim a credit upon later delivery.
