The CEO of a multinational financial services firm said Wednesday that former President Donald Trump was right about crucial issues such as the economy and immigration.
Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, went on CNBC to say Democrats are mistaken to dismiss Trump supporters.
“I wish the Democrats would think a little bit more carefully when they talk about MAGA,” he said. “When people say MAGA, they’re actually talking about people who vote for Trump. They’re basically scapegoating them. That you are like him. But I don’t think they’re voting for Trump because of his family values.”
“Just take a step back, be honest,” he continued. “He was kind of right about NATO. He was kind of right about immigration. He grew the economy quite well. Tax reform worked. He was right some about China.”
The comments come after Trump won the GOP primary in Iowa with a majority of the votes, and he appears likely to win the nomination. Trump is beating President Joe Biden in national polls, as well as key battleground states, according to the Real Clear Politics aggregate.
Dimon said Democrats should avoid demonizing Trump supporters, which could hurt their campaigns.
“I don’t like how [Trump] said things about Mexico, but he wasn’t wrong about some of these critical issues, and that’s why [people are] voting for him,” he said. “And I think people should be a little bit more respectful about our fellow citizens. And when you guys have people on here, you should always ask, ‘But why?’ Not like it’s some binary thing of you’re supporting Trump or not supporting Trump.”
“The Democrats have done a pretty good job of the deplorable hugging onto their Bibles and their beer and their guns,” he continued. “I mean, really, can we just stop that stuff and actually grow up and treat people with respect and listen to them a little bit?”
“I do think this negative talk about MAGA is going to hurt Biden’s re-election campaign,” he concluded.
