Actress and activist Jane Fonda appeared in a new video alongside Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, calling on California voters to approve Proposition 50, a ballot measure that would allow the state to adopt a new congressional map before the 2030 census.
“Hi, I’m Jane Fonda, and I’m here with Jasmine Crockett, Congresswoman from Texas, and she knows what redistricting, what gerrymandering means,” Fonda said in an online video. “She is so powerful in Congress that the GOP want to get rid of her district in Texas. They’ve redistricted her house out of her district. We have to vote yes on Prop 50, don’t we, Jasmine?”
Crockett replied, “Absolutely. So November 4, California, we need you to stand up. You just heard it from the queen herself, okay? It is time for us to fight fire with fire… This is about our democracy. This isn’t about just me being in Texas. It’s about our voices… So make sure you vote yes on Prop 50 on November 4. Please do it. Yes on Prop 50.”
Proposition 50 would permit California lawmakers to use a new congressional district map until 2030.
The proposed map, supported by Gov. Gavin Newsom, is expected to favor Democratic candidates for the U.S. House, according to State Court Report. The measure comes after Texas Republicans redrew their own congressional map to favor GOP candidates, a move expected to flip five Democratic seats.
If Proposition 50 passes, five California congressional districts are projected to become either competitive or reliably Democratic. Under the proposal, the state’s independent redistricting commission would regain control of the process following the 2030 elections and census, according to the State Court Report.
A Politico analysis published Monday noted that the California measure mirrors the kind of mid-decade redistricting that was common during the Gilded Age, when both major parties used map-drawing as “an extension of electoral combat.” The report stated that the initiative has divided Democrats between those emphasizing fairness through independent commissions and those who view Proposition 50 as a necessary counterweight to Republican-led redistricting elsewhere.
The video marks Fonda’s latest foray into electoral activism.
In September 2024, Fonda appeared in a viral video knocking on doors in Michigan to support then-Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, as previously reported by DX.
Fonda, 87, has been actively involved in political causes for decades. Crockett, who represents parts of Dallas County, has been a frequent critic of Texas’s 2025 redistricting plan, which she has described as designed to diminish minority representation.
California voters will decide Proposition 50 on November 4.
