Hyundai is recalling 51,587 Tucson SUVs due to improperly installed trailer wiring harnesses that could cause electrical shorts and potential fire hazards.
The recall affects 2022-2024 model years equipped with the optional tow hitch wiring. Hyundai has confirmed that there were three fires in the U.S. related to the issue.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that the faulty installation allows water to enter the control module. This moisture infiltration can trigger electrical shorts or cause trailer lighting systems to fail.
In rare cases, electrical shorts within the module could lead to overheating or melting, according to NHTSA’s December 23 recall letter.
The safety issue stems from incorrect installation procedures during manufacturing. Water entering the electrical system creates dangerous conditions that compromise both vehicle safety and towing capabilities.
Hyundai will mail notification letters to affected owners on February 16. The letters will include instructions for scheduling free repairs at authorized dealerships.
Dealers will replace the entire trailer wiring harness at no cost to owners. Until repairs are completed, Hyundai recommends parking recalled vehicles outdoors as a precautionary measure.
The recall targets explicitly Tucson models equipped with OEM trailer wiring harnesses. Owners can check their vehicle’s recall status using their VIN on the NHTSA website.
