JD Vance and his family will not get to tour their soon-to-be home after failing to receive an invite from Vice President Kamala Harris.
Incoming vice presidents typically enjoy a pre-inaugural visit to the vice president’s residence located on the Naval Observatory campus. This allows the incoming vice president and their family to prepare for the move and make any required arrangements. In the case of JD and his wife Usha, it would allow them to consider any child-proofing requirements given the young age of their three children.
However, multiple Democratic and Republican sources have told CBS News that the sitting vice president has yet to extend an invitation for a sit-down or a tour of the Queen Anne-style mansion.
Staffers for the incoming second family reportedly reached out to the Harris team to obtain any details that would help prepare the residence for their children, all of whom are under the age of eight. After struggling to gain details from Harris staffers, aides who work at the Naval Observatory had a call with the Vance family to “discuss the layout of the Residence, logistics and practicalities of the move in, and to help answer any questions the Vance’s had as it related to the Residence,” per CNN.
While Harris did not visit the campus when she assumed office, advisers to former Vice President Mike Pense told CBS that he invited her and her husband for a tour, which Harris declined.
Although Harris and Vance may not have the traditional sit-down, the Second Gentleman, Doug Emhoff, reportedly spoke with the incoming Second Lady, Usha Vance, for around 45 minutes last week.
The lack of invite comes just days before the new administration is set to take office. As reported by The Dallas Express, Vice President Harris recently officiated the certification process of the 2024 election during a joint session of Congress. This marks one of the final steps taken before Trump is officially inaugurated as the 47th President on January 20.
