The Michigan State University (MSU) community is grieving after a gunman opened fire Monday night, leaving three students dead and five grievously injured.

Convicted felon Anthony McRae, 43, who state officials identified as the suspected shooter, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to The Detroit News.

Per a news release issued by the MSU Police Department, “The first call reporting an active shooter took place at 8:18 p.m. at Berkey Hall. A shelter-in-place was immediately put into place for campus and the surrounding community.”

MSU student Claire Papoulias told CNN, “The shooter opened the back classroom door and started firing at my classmates in the back, wounding them. I smelled and saw the gunpowder. I thought I was going to die.”

The gunman left Berkey Hall and then went to the nearby student union building, where he opened fire on students again. Police said they found two students dead at the first location and a third at the second, according to CNN.

McRae remained at large for a few hours before authorities found him dead.

Three students remain hospitalized in critical condition, according to the Lansing State Journal.

MSU President Santa J. Ono issued a statement on Tuesday:

“Our hearts are broken with the Michigan State University family following last night’s horrific shooting. We wish for a speedy recovery of the wounded, and we pray for comfort and grace for the loved ones of those so suddenly lost.”

“I know many in our community are reeling from this event as you have friends or family who belong to the MSU community. I encourage us all to take a moment to show our appreciation and support for one another. Support resources are available on campus for students, faculty and staff.”
