From Snow Piles To Epstein Files: Mamdani’s Mayoral Honeymoon Over

New York City’s Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, seems to be facing a challenging start to 2026.

Recently released documents have linked his mother’s name to Jeffrey Epstein, adding to the scrutiny he is under. Additionally, there has been growing criticism regarding delays in trash collection, resulting in garbage accumulating throughout the city.

The Department of Justice released over 3.5 million pages of Epstein-related documents on January 30, as part of the Epstein Files Transparency Act signed by President Donald Trump in November 2025.

Among the revelations was an October 21, 2009, email from celebrity publicist Peggy Siegal to Epstein, in which she mentioned Mamdani’s mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, as an attendee at an afterparty for her film “Amelia.” An afterparty was hosted at convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell’s townhouse.

The email, which also listed former President Bill Clinton and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as attendees, does not directly allege wrongdoing by Nair. However, the appearance of his mother’s name in the files has drawn scrutiny to the 34-year-old mayor, who took office over a month ago, promising to govern the city “as a democratic socialist.”

Soon after Nair’s name was found in the documents, Fox News published resurfaced images from a 2017 film-industry luncheon hosted by Siegal, showing Mamdani alongside his mother and other powerful Hollywood elites. Siegal, once a dominant force in entertainment publicity, was allegedly cut off by major studios in 2019 following reports of her association with Epstein.

As the Epstein files controversy continues to unravel, Mamdani also faces frustration from New Yorkers over sanitation issues following last week’s snowstorm.

The city’s Department of Sanitation acknowledged earlier this week that trash collection has fallen approximately 24 hours behind schedule, with crews prioritizing snow removal over garbage pickup.

“As you’ve said, sanitation is currently running about 24 hours behind on trash collection. I know that they are working with everything that they have, to come up to speed. And that will continue to be a focus for us, because what we want, is a city where New Yorkers can continue to return back to their lives as they were. ” Mamdani said during a press conference this week, as images of towering trash piles circulated on social media.

Residents across the five boroughs have reported that garbage has been left uncollected for four to five days in some neighborhoods.

“It’s bad. Honestly, I can’t think of another thing to say. It’s repulsive every day,” one New Yorker told CBS. “It has been more than a day, sitting here for more than a day. This is like day four or five. It seems like a little longer than a day late,” another resident said.

The sanitation delays come as the city continues recovering from a winter storm that dropped over a foot of snow across the state. Acting Department of Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan, a holdover from the Eric Adams administration, said frozen snow banks created unforeseen “challenges” for sanitation workers.

The combination of the Epstein files mentioning his mom and visible city service disruptions appears to be an early test for Mamdani, who defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in an upset during the June 2025 Democratic primary, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
