From Middle-Class Champion To Millionaire Buyer: Justin Trudeau’s Luxury Homecoming

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has apparently bought a $4.26 million mansion, according to property records filed with Quebec’s land registry office.

Trudeau purchased the sprawling two-story house in Montreal’s Outremont neighborhood. The estate is almost 5,000 square feet and was built in the 1930s, according to The Montreal Gazette. The city values the property at about $5.99 million for tax purposes. However, the former Prime Minister got it for $4.26 million – or roughly $1.7 million less than that assessed value.

Land records also show the 54-year-old bought it in his own name (as he is still finalizing his divorce from Sophie Grégoire Trudeau), while reportedly dating pop singer Katy Perry.

Middle-Class Advocate’s Post-Office Purchase: Return to Affluent Roots

The purchase comes just about one year after Trudeau resigned as prime minister and Liberal Party leader in early 2025, ending his decade-long tenure. Throughout his time in office, Trudeau often positioned himself as a champion of Canada’s “middle class,” frequently saying that he was representing the”middle class and those working hard to join it” in his speeches.

The Outremont neighborhood, where Trudeau purchased his new home, is one of Montreal’s most affluent and elite areas, known for its historic architecture. The area has long been a haven for wealthy businesspeople.

Trudeau has deep personal ties to Outremont, some of which he may not have been advertising to his “middle-class” constituents during previous campaigns. He attended the prestigious Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in the neighborhood before enrolling at McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He and Sophie also lived in Outremont during the first few years of their marriage before moving to Ottawa when he became prime minister.

Since leaving office, Trudeau has maintained a relatively low public profile, though he confirmed in December 2025 that he is dating American pop star Katy Perry. Perry announced the relationship on social media.

The real estate purchase was reportedly signed off on before a notary and officially registered on February 10. Property records show the sale as final. The new multimillion-dollar home adds Trudeau to a growing list of progressive politicians who have faced scrutiny over a boom in personal wealth while publicly advocating for economic equality and affordable housing policies.

However, this criticism isn’t new for the former Prime Minister – during his time in office, he faced backlash over expensive vacations, including a 2016 trip to the Aga Khan’s private island that resulted in “ethics violations.”

Irony in Advocacy: Champions of ‘Affordable Housing’ and Equality Build Personal Fortunes

The Trudeau property purchase follows similar reports of politicians buying expensive real estate while campaigning on a platform of economic and housing equality.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has faced congressional oversight inquiries after her husband’s business valuations jumped from approximately $51,000 to as much as $30 million in a single year.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has demanded financial records from companies tied to her husband, Timothy Mynett, including a California winery with minimal to no public presence and an investment firm that saw a significant increase in valuation in just a few years.

Omar entered Congress in 2019 with a reported negative net worth but now faces questions about how her household’s wealth has boomed.

Similarly, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) has reported an eye-opening jump from negative net worth to a multimillion-dollar status since she joined Congress in 2019. The congresswoman, who campaigned on economic justice, now owns at least five rental properties generating around $350,000 in annual rental income, including a property on Martha’s Vineyard where median home prices exceed $1.3 million.

Both Omar and Pressley have been vocal advocates for “affordable” housing, criminal justice reform, and reducing income inequality.
