A former member of Congress is calling for an investigation into U.S. Rep. Kay Granger’s staff for failing to disclose to the public that she had been living in an assisted living facility with memory issues.
“She was well enough to show up to Congress for the unveiling of her portrait, but as we were talking about … she didn’t vote that day, because I don’t think she was necessarily capable of voting,” former U.S. Rep. and news commentator Jason Chaffetz said on Fox News Outnumbered.
“This demands an ethics investigation because what was the staff doing, how were they responding to constituents?” Chaffetz said.
Chaffetz was not alone in criticizing her staff. U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) also commented.
“That in itself, I think, is very problematic. And she was collecting a paycheck. I think that money needs to be returned to the Treasury for sure,” Malliotakis told Newsmax.
“The staff has been defrauding the public by putting up those types of posts, acting as if everything was OK,” Malliotakis said. “It really is, I think, outrageous.”
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, our team visited the assisted living facility to verify whether Granger was residing there and to ask how she planned to vote on the spending bill, after phone calls went unanswered and her office appeared to be unstaffed. Upon arrival, two employees confirmed that Granger was living at the facility. However, we were not allowed to conduct an interview about the ongoing spending debate in the House of Representatives or ask how or if Rep. Granger planned to vote.
The Congresswoman has not voted since late July.
“Kay Granger was supposed to be a representative for her constituents, who are real people with real needs. And for the past six months they have not had an advocate in Washington,” Fox co-host Carley Shimkus said.”Where were her colleagues, why didn’t they say anything about this?”
Several people have echoed a call for an investigation of Granger’s staff.
“Yes everyone involved in the coverup that includes @SpeakerJohnson for either knowing and doing nothing, are not responsible enough to even know she was not showing up,” social media user Christyne Campbell wrote on X.

“Why didn’t Kay Granger’s staff report her inability to serve? Were they protecting their jobs? This is outrageous,” social media user Juanita Broaddrick wrote on X.

“Kay Granger should’ve resigned… but it’s her staff’s fault, who, like Joe Biden, Dianne Feinstein and Mitch McConnell… knew she wasn’t fit to serve, but propped her carcass up to keep collecting their paychecks,” Comedian Tim Young wrote on X.

The Dallas Express reached out to Granger’s Chief of Staff Steve Ruhlen, Director of Communications Valerie Nelson, Director of Casework Services Josie Flores, and Senior Legislative Assistant Jerome A. Vainisi for comment but did not receive a response.
