USDA allegations about luxury vehicle ownership among some SNAP recipients are fueling a renewed debate over fraud controls and eligibility rules.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins alleged that 14,000 individuals receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in one unnamed state were linked to luxury vehicles, including Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Porsches, and more than 2,000 Teslas, according to a post on Tuesday on X.

Rollins wrote, “In just ONE state, 14,000 individuals receiving SNAP benefits were driving LUXURY VEHICLES!” and added that the findings reflected abuse of taxpayer-funded nutrition programs.

Rollins alleged the vehicle data came from a review by the Foundation for Government Accountability, which used 2023 state government data provided to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. However, the state was not identified.

The allegations arrive as the Trump administration has reportedly claimed to have moved 4.3 million people off SNAP and is expanding scrutiny of eligibility records, per The Washington Times.

USDA has separately reportedly alleged preliminary reviews found other irregularities, including potentially deceased individuals enrolled in the program, while seeking broader data-sharing from states.

The luxury-vehicle allegations add another layer to broader questions about what SNAP permits recipients to buy. An October 2025 investigation by The Dallas Express found numerous high-end food products, including caviar and lobster, were listed as SNAP-eligible through online retailers, while Amazon later described one wine listing identified as eligible as an error.

In Texas, separate new SNAP restrictions took effect April 1, barring purchases of candy and sweetened drinks using Lone Star Cards, while foods such as chips remain eligible, according to prior reporting by The Dallas Express. Those changes were distinct from the federal fraud allegations raised this week but reflect a wider push to tighten program rules.

Some data suggests many SNAP recipients exhaust their benefits before the month’s end, despite average monthly grocery spending of $832, which is 20% more than non-SNAP households, according to a data analysis by Numerator.

Questions remain about whether luxury vehicle ownership alone constitutes fraud. Vehicle ownership can involve leases, financing, shared family assets, business ownership, or changed economic circumstances not necessarily reflected in eligibility records. The underlying state data cited by Rollins has not been publicly released, and the claims have not been independently verified.
