Fire At Swiss Ski Resort Bar Claims 40+ Lives On New Year’s Day, 115 Injured

Crans-Montana Bar Fire: 40 Dead In New Year's Tragedy | Viral image on X

A devastating fire tore through a crowded bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana during the early morning hours on January 1, reportedly killing at least 40 people and injuring 115 others.

The blaze, which erupted during a New Year’s Eve celebration, has been described by Swiss officials as one of the country’s worst tragedies in recent memory, mainly impacting younger partygoers – both locals and travelers in town for the holiday.

The fire took place at Le Constellation, a basement bar allegedly popular amongst teenagers and younger adults.

Around 1:30 a.m. local time, as the crowd rang in the new year, a waitress carrying a champagne bottle topped with lit sparklers or a “fountain candle” held it too close to the low ceiling, igniting the blaze, according to videos seen online as well as a statement detailing the tragedy from the Valais Cantonal Police (VC).

“In total, the event mobilized a very large number of forces, including approximately 30 gendarmes, 60 inspectors, 70 firefighters, and nearly 150 medical responders, supported by 42 ambulances and 13 helicopters,” The police statement reads.

Witnesses described the fire spreading quickly across the wooden ceiling, which may have been lined with soundproofing or potentially flammable insulation, contributing to the rapid, uncontrollable spread of flames.

The venue’s basement layout, with a narrow staircase and small doorway leading to the exit, only worsened the situation, causing a deadly crowd surge as panicked patrons fought to escape the fire.

Video footage captured the horror unfolding: one clip shows a person attempting to extinguish initial flames on the ceiling. At the same time, music continued to play before the fire appeared to engulf the entire space. Others broke windows to flee, while survivors recounted screams, bodies on the ground, and improvised triage centers set up in the freezing Swiss night.

The hashtag #Crans_Montana is now trending on sites like X, showing not only the horrific videos from the scene, but also an outpouring of posts from victims and their families describing the nightmare of a situation.

Among the victims were travelers from Italy, France, and possibly other countries, with several reported missing and identification efforts still complicated due to severe burns requiring dental records and DNA analysis.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin quickly spoke to the public, painting a picture of the nation’s grief, while also ordering flags to fly at half-mast for at least five days.

“What was a moment of joy turned into a tragedy in Crans-Montana last night, felt across the country and beyond. The Federal Council has taken note of this with deep dismay. Its thoughts are with the victims, the injured and their families and it extends its deepest condolences,” Parmelin wrote on X.

VC Police have now opened an investigation into potential safety failures, still saying it’s too early to assign blame for the fires. However, they did confirm that “the possibility of a terrorist attack has been ruled out.”

The bar’s capacity was reported to be around 300, according to SwissInfo.com, yet the exact number of people inside at the time of the fire remains unclear.

As forensics teams comb the site, shielded by privacy screens amongst a memorial of flowers and candles, the world mourns the losses.

Other Tragic Fires in Modern History

Fires in nightclubs, bars, and concert venues have claimed countless lives over the last few decades, often due to flammable materials and inadequate safety standards.

Some of the most deadly examples in modern history include:

  • The Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1942 killed 492 people when a fire from flammable decorations spread rapidly through the overcrowded club, trapping patrons behind jammed revolving doors. The tragedy ultimately catalyzed many fire prevention regulation updates in Massachusetts.
  • The Kiss Nightclub fire in Santa Maria, Brazil, in 2013 resulted in 242 deaths after a band’s pyrotechnics ignited flammable acoustic foam on the ceiling, per the National Library of Health, producing toxic smoke inside the packed venue. A similar type of foam may have been seen in the videos of the Swiss fire on New Year’s Eve.
  • The Republica Cromañón rock concert fire in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2004 claimed 194 lives when a flare set fire to flammable ceiling netting, causing a stampede in the club that was already over capacity. The Buenos Aires Herald also reported that 1,400 people were left injured, and 18 arrests were made for those either connected to the firefight or the mismanagement of the venue that night.
  • The Station Nightclub fire in West Warwick, Rhode Island, in 2003 killed 100 people as pyrotechnics during a “Great White” rock concert ignited soundproofing foam (once again), per NIST data, leading to a quick spread of flames inside the venue.
  • The Lame Horse Nightclub fire in Perm, Russia, in 2009 left 156 dead after fireworks sparked flames on plastic ceiling sheathing, filling the space with deadly fumes. According to state-owned Russian news outlet RIA, the fire also resulted in 100 survivors who were left severely injured.
