At least two people are dead, and several others are injured after a massive rock formation fell on three boats in Brazil on Saturday, WFVX reports.

Officials said a massive rock formation fell on three boats in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais on Saturday, killing at least two people and injuring several others. A video of the event has circulated on social media showing the moment when the rocks fell on the boaters. Brazilian authorities have verified the footage of the incident that happened on Saturday, January 8.

The accident occurred in the city of Capitólia, as confirmed by the Brazilian Navy.

According to the travel website TripAdvisor, the area is a popular destination for local and tourist boaters.

According to the Brazilian news portal G1, a sudden downpour in the neighboring city of Piumhi dislodged the rocks, causing them to fall from a height of more than 16 feet, MSN reports.

Officials said that in addition to the confirmed fatalities, at least 15 people were injured in the tragedy, some critically.

According to Captain Daniel Henrique Alves de Oliveira, more deaths are expected. Each boat was thought to be carrying between 12 and 20 people, including children.

Victims were taken to hospitals in the area. According to Pedro Aihara, a spokesman for the local fire department, 23 people have already been released.
