Dallas-based Air Vent Inc. has issued a recall for three million roof fans over concerns they pose a fire safety risk, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The Air Vent recall covers electric motors for gable- and roof-mounted attic fans. The product was sold at stores and wholesalers, both in-store and online, across the country from August 2003 to December 2013, including ABC Supply, Lowe’s, and Beacon.

The fans, which sold for around $74 and $92, are being recalled because the motor’s safety cutoff may pose a risk of short-circuiting and creating a fire risk. According to the CPSC notice, the impacted fans can be identified by the distinctive vent pattern on the motor end bells, with the following model numbers being recalled:

  • DOW-136-0-34-XIN
  • DOW-136-0-26-XIN
  • DOW-136-0-40-XIN
  • DOW-136-0-40-XIN-3/4”
  • D-RE-PSC-127/20-4P1SP

The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the impacted fans and contact Air Vent for a refund. Consumers will need to complete an online registration and verification form, accompanied by photo proof of the fan, to obtain the refund.

While no injuries have been reported, the official notice says Air Vent has received 159 reports of incidents related to the recalled attic fan motors that involve burning or fire.
