Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, and the lead federal prosecutor in cases involving Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, has reportedly been fired from her role within the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Comey’s abrupt removal cuts short a nearly decade-long tenure in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where she prosecuted some of the highest-profile cases in recent memory.
In addition to the cases against Epstein and Maxwell, Comey worked to prosecute Sean “Diddy” Combs on various allegations, although many consider this prosecution a failure after Combs was found not guilty of the most serious charges in the case, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
No official reason for the firing has been released at the time. However, sources close to the situation told The New York Times that Comey was presented with a letter citing Article II of the Constitution, which outlines the powers given to the President.
Another source close to the situation spoke with Politico and confirmed that the decision was not made by the office’s interim U.S. attorney, Jay Clayton, indicating that it was likely a direct decision made by the DOJ.
A spokesman for the Southern District of New York denied a request for comment by The New York Times after the firing was confirmed.
This dismissal comes as President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi face scrutiny over the refusal to release the alleged client list related to the Epstein investigation. Trump has claimed that these files are “fake news” and were created by Mr. Comey and other Democratic leaders, including former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
“And I would say that, you know, these files were made up by Comey. They were made up by Obama. They were made up by the Biden [administration]. And we went through years of that with the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax. With all of the different things that we had to go through. We’ve gone through years of it,” said the President, as reported by The Dallas Express.
Ms. Comey’s father, James Comey, was appointed by then-President Barack Obama as the FBI director and held this role when Trump first took office in 2017. Trump fired Comey that same year following an FBI investigation into the President’s ties to Russia, according to the Associated Press.
