UPDATE to original story: March 12, 4:45 p.m.: After the suspect rammed into the building, security opened fire. Officials found the suspect dead. Responders reportedly found a large amount of explosives in his vehicle. A security guard was hit, but is expected to recover. In total, eight first responders went to hospitals near Detroit.

A car reportedly crashed into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Detroit, in the afternoon on March 12. Smoke began billowing from the building, and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of an active shooter.

 

“FBI personnel are on the scene with partners in Michigan and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan,” FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X.

Initial reports suggested the suspect was believed to be dead, according to Fox News.

“OCSO and multiple agencies on scene at Temple Israel West Bloomfield for reports of an active shooter. Emergency personnel clearing the building,” sheriff’s officials wrote. “Updates to follow.”

Officials with the Bloomfield Township Police Department said local schools were in “secure mode” due to an ongoing incident in West Bloomfield.

“This is out of precaution, there are no known threats to Bloomfield Hills schools at this time,” police officials wrote.

Meanwhile, Jewish leaders around Detroit began taking extra safety measures. 

“We are aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel. Law enforcement are responding,” the Jewish Federation of Detroit posted on Facebook. “Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown.”

Jewish Federation officials asked community members to avoid the area. 

“We continue to monitor the situation at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield and will share more information as soon as possible,” they wrote. “Please continue to refrain from traveling to the area at this time.”
