Around four months after the murder of Gabby Petito, the FBI released a statement that they found a notebook by Brian Laundrie’s remains, in which he wrote his confession of killing his girlfriend. Soon, the investigation will be closed.

Detectives found a backpack, notebook, and a revolver by Laundrie’s remains around T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on October 20, 2021, close to where his parents live in Florida. According to Rolling Stone, authorities had searched that area before that date, but it was flooded at that time. Autopsy results, which were difficult due to his remains being underwater, confirmed death by suicide, with a gunshot wound to his head.

The FBI released their findings from Brian Laundrie’s notebook on Friday, January 21.

“A review of the notebook revealed Mr. Laundrie’s written statements claiming responsibility for Ms. Petito’s death,” the FBI said.

“All logical investigative steps have been concluded in this case,” said Michael Schneider, FBI Denver Division Special Agent in Charge. “The investigation did not identify any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito. The FBI’s primary focus throughout the investigation was to bring justice to Gabby and her family.”

Schneider shared his appreciation to the public for all their help in finding answers to Petito’s case. “On behalf of the FBI, I want to express my deepest appreciation to the public for the thousands of tips that were provided during the investigation,” he expressed.

Gabby’s family spoke to their attorney, Richard B. Stafford, about their feelings.

“The FBI’s diligent and painstaking efforts in this extremely complicated case are greatly appreciated,” the statement said. “The FBI’s collection of facts and information is of such high quality and quantity that there is no doubt that Brian Laundrie murdered Gabby.”

The actual writings of Laundrie’s confession to killing Petito have not been released, but it is enough to establish him as the murderer, according to the FBI.
