The family of the Memphis man who was beaten to death by police has filed a $550 million federal lawsuit against the city.

Tyre Nichols, 29, died three days after a traffic stop. Five officers involved were fired and charged with crimes.

The lawsuit did not specify an amount, but family attorney Ben Crump mentioned $550 million during a Wednesday afternoon press conference.

“The amount is a message,” Crump said.  “If it happens in your city, we’re coming to your city too,”

The City of Memphis, Memphis Police Department Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis, the five officers charged with killing Nichols, two additional Memphis officers, and three Memphis Fire Department employees were also named as defendants.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for Western Tennessee.
