The Supreme Court declined to review a decision to stop issuing specialty license plates with the Confederate flag in North Carolina.

The High Court did not comment on the case, which was similar to one from Texas in 2015. Justices decided Texas plates were state property in that 5-4 ruling.

The Texas chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans claimed the state was wrong not to issue a specialty license plate with the group’s insignia.

In 2021, North Carolina decided to stop issuing specialty plates with the insignia of the North Carolina chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

A lawsuit followed, claiming the North Carolina decision violated state and federal law. Lower courts dismissed the case until it was appealed to the Supreme Court.
