Police have since taken two armed people into custody; officials later confirmed in a media briefing that at least one person is dead and up to 22 people were injured in the shooting.
11 children are hurt, with nine having gunshot wounds.
Police confirmed 3 people have been detained, and the scene has been cleared.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said that he, his wife, and his mother had been present and praised responding agencies for their quick actions.
Footage posted by Fantasy Fanatic also shows multiple fans tackling one of the shooters.
One citizen had also posted a video of a downed person surrounded by fans, with one attempting to resuscitate them.
“As I was leaving the scene, I saw members of our Kansas City Fire Department administering aid for folks who were seriously injured without concern for the shootings and the challenges that were near them,” said Lucas in the briefing. “This is absolutely a tragedy, the likes of which we would have never expected in Kansas City and the likes of which we will remember for some time.”
Kansas City Police Chief Stacy Graves said that she was angry that the shooting had taken place despite the massive amount of police present, saying that those attending should have been able to expect a “safe environment.”
“We had over 800 law enforcement officers, Kansas City, and other agencies at the location to keep everyone safe and because of bad actors, which were very few, this tragedy occurred even in the presence of uniformed law enforcement officers who again ran towards them and took them into custody,” said Graves.
Graves praised officers for taking the shooters into custody while rendering aid to those wounded. Graves said that the investigation is ongoing and that more updates will be provided as they become available.
“Your police department stands ready, and we are invested in the safety and betterment of Kansas City,” said Graves.
“My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today’s incidents—a huge thank you to the first responders who ran towards the sound of danger. You’re the ones who should be celebrated today,” said Trey Smith, Number 65 on the Kansas City Chiefs in a social media post.
Kansas City Chiefs released a statement shortly after the media briefing confirming that all players, coaches, staff, and their families are safe and accounted for.
