On Wednesday, President Donald Trump celebrated Black History Month by welcoming community leaders to the White House. During the event, he promoted his administration’s initiatives in economic development and education.
The February 18 gathering focused on several key policies, including increased funding for historically black colleges and new tax benefits for working families.
Trump’s second-term agenda includes hundreds of millions in additional funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the creation of “Trump Accounts” — savings tools giving newborns early stock market exposure. The administration frames these measures as addressing generational wealth gaps while benefiting all Americans.
The President’s Working Families Tax Cut Act eliminates taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits. Military personnel, including 350,000 black service members, received a $1,776 tax-free bonus dubbed the “Warrior Dividend.”
Trump also emphasized election security through his SAVE America Act, which he says will “safeguard the voices of black Americans — and all Americans — by preventing illegal votes from disenfranchising any citizen.”
The administration pointed to first-term achievements, including the FUTURE Act, which secured $255 million annually for HBCUs. Trump also forgave $322 million in hurricane-related loans to four historically black institutions.
His Opportunity Zones initiative attracted $75 billion in private investment to distressed communities, generating $11 billion in wealth for minority neighborhoods. The First Step Act reformed criminal justice sentencing and rehabilitation programs.
During Trump’s first term, black unemployment reached record lows, with over 350,000 people lifting themselves out of poverty. Manufacturing growth and trade policies drove much of these employment gains.
The White House also noted efforts to reduce backlogs of VA benefits for 2.4 million black veterans and reform the VA loan program.
The Black History Month celebration coincides with preparations for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Trump pledged to continue policies aimed at “securing the American Dream for generations to come.”
