Attendees at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner are questioning security after a gunman reached the event’s screening area Saturday night. The shooter injured a Secret Service Uniformed Division officer, prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other top officials.

The shooting unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet officials, members of Congress, journalists, and guests had gathered for the annual dinner.

Two law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, the Associated Press reported. D.C. police said one suspect was in custody and was believed to have acted alone. Police also said officers recovered two firearms and multiple knives. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said prosecutors charged Allen with firearms and assault charges.

D.C. police said a Secret Service Uniformed Division officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported for treatment. Trump later said the shooter fired at the officer from close range and credited the vest with protecting him.

New Details On Suspect

Fox News reported that Allen is a computer scientist and independent game developer from Torrance, California, whose online records show experience building shooter-style video games.

The California Institute of Technology confirmed to Fox News Digital that a student named Cole Allen graduated from the school in 2017. California State University, Dominguez Hills also confirmed that a person by the same name graduated with a master’s degree in computer science in May 2025, according to Fox.

Fox also reported that Allen’s LinkedIn profile says he began working for C2 Education in 2020. A December 2024 C2 Education Facebook post honored “Cole Allen of C2 Education Torrence” as its December teacher of the month, according to the outlet.

During a late-night news conference, authorities said Allen rushed a Secret Service checkpoint while armed with multiple weapons and opened fire on a Secret Service officer, Fox reported. Agents fired back at Allen, who was not struck, and both Allen and the officer were taken to the hospital, according to the outlet.

Pirro said Allen was charged with two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. More charges are expected, Fox reported.

Security Questions Emerge

Some attendees publicly questioned the security process after the shooting. They claimed event staff barely reviewed tickets and did not visibly conduct bag checks before guests entered the event.

Kari Lake and another attendee posting under the name Raq echoed those concerns in posts on X. Both described loose screening before the incident.

Kari Lake, who attended the dinner, also criticized the security process in a post on X.

“I can’t believe how lax the security was at the White House correspondents dinner tonight,” Lake wrote. “Upon entering nobody asked to visibly INSPECT my ticket nor asked for my photo identification. All one had to do was flash what appeared to be a ticket and they were fine with that.”

Another attendee who posts under the name Raq wrote on X that there were “no security or bag checks” and that “tickets were barely looked at.”

The Washington Hilton typically remains open to regular guests during the dinner, while security has generally focused on the ballroom, with less screening for people not entering the dinner itself, the Associated Press reported.

The Secret Service had not released a full public account explaining how Allen allegedly reached the screening area or whether any security procedures failed as of publication.

Gunman Stopped Near Screening Area

The gunman opened fire outside the subterranean ballroom where Trump and other guests sat, AP reported. The FBI said a suspect was in custody after the shooting.

Guests ducked under tables as Secret Service and other law enforcement officers swarmed the banquet hall. The Secret Service evacuated all protectees, including Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other Trump administration officials, AP reported.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated after shots were heard at the dinner, Reuters reported.

Trump later praised law enforcement for the response.

“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Trump later said law enforcement requested that attendees leave the premises “consistent with protocol” and that organizers would reschedule the event within 30 days.

Same Hotel Where Gunman Shot Reagan

The shooting occurred at the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt in 1981.

John Hinckley Jr. shot Reagan outside the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981, after the President delivered a speech there, according to the Reagan Library. Hinckley also wounded White House press secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy, and D.C. police officer Thomas Delahanty.

Saturday night’s shooting is drawing new scrutiny over security planning for high-profile political and media events involving the President.

Authorities had not released a final official motive statement as of publication, though the New York Post reported that Allen sent relatives an anti-Trump manifesto shortly before the shooting.

The Dallas Express will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
