Attendees at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner are questioning security after a gunman reached the event’s screening area Saturday night. The shooter injured a Secret Service Uniformed Division officer, prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other top officials.
The shooting unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet officials, members of Congress, journalists, and guests had gathered for the annual dinner.
Two law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, the Associated Press reported. D.C. police said one suspect was in custody and was believed to have acted alone. Police also said officers recovered two firearms and multiple knives. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said prosecutors charged Allen with firearms and assault charges.

Security Questions Emerge
Kari Lake, who attended the dinner, also criticized the security process in a post on X.
I can’t believe how lax the security was at the White House correspondents dinner tonight. Upon entering nobody asked to visibly INSPECT my ticket nor asked for my photo identification. All one had to do was flash what appeared to be a ticket and they were fine with that. When… pic.twitter.com/w79Z3MnSjK

Left the WHCD after having an uneasy feeling
There were no security or bag checks which I thought was suspicious
Everyone was ushered in and shoved through the doors to make way for Secret Service/dogs
Tickets were barely looked at
Monitoring the situation and praying that…

The Washington Hilton typically remains open to regular guests during the dinner, while security has generally focused on the ballroom, with less screening for people not entering the dinner itself, the Associated Press reported.
The Secret Service had not released a full public account explaining how Allen allegedly reached the screening area or whether any security procedures failed as of publication.
Gunman Stopped Near Screening Area
Guests ducked under tables as Secret Service and other law enforcement officers swarmed the banquet hall. The Secret Service evacuated all protectees, including Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other Trump administration officials, AP reported.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated after shots were heard at the dinner, Reuters reported.
Trump later praised law enforcement for the response.
“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The shooting occurred at the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt in 1981.
Saturday night’s shooting is drawing new scrutiny over security planning for high-profile political and media events involving the President.
Authorities had not released a final official motive statement as of publication, though the New York Post reported that Allen sent relatives an anti-Trump manifesto shortly before the shooting.
