A shooting during a warrant operation left one person injured and prompted the Waxahachie Police Department to place an officer on administrative leave, the department said.

Police believe the firearm discharge was accidental, according to the department’s public Facebook statement. The department plans an internal investigation and has asked the Texas Rangers to conduct a separate inquiry.

Waxahachie officers assisted the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office with an active warrant at 10:59 a.m. on October 10. The operation took place in the 100 block of Rusty Lane.

The person who suffered the gunshot wound received medical care. The wound was not life-threatening based on the information available to the department when it issued its statement, police said.

The department placed the officer on administrative leave under its policy and will offer the officer access to a peer-support team and professional counselors, according to the statement.

“WPD will review all policies related to the incident,” the department said in its Facebook post.

The statement did not identify the officer or the injured person or explain how the firearm discharged. It also did not say whether the injured person was the subject of the warrant.

WPD did not describe the warrant’s underlying offense but concluded its statement about the incident with a message encouraging anyone facing domestic violence to reach out to The Heights Ellis County Family Resources for support.
