Residents, businesses, and schools in Lewisville are under a boil order warning until at least 1 p.m. on Monday, but the order could be extended pending water testing results.
A major water main break that occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday caused water outages in many areas of the city and low water pressure in other parts of the system. Crews restored water service within a few hours of the break, but a precautionary boil notice was issued for the affected areas. About 80% of the city’s water customers have been affected by the boil water notice, according to the City of Lewisville.
“Impacted customers should boil their tap water prior to using it for cooking, hand-washing, and similar uses until the boil water notice is lifted,” the notification on the city’s website cautioned.
The boil order was issued because a significant drop in water pressure can allow contaminants to enter the water system.
“To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes,” the notice said.
“In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption purposes.”
Due to the water advisory and resulting safety and sanitation concerns, the Lewisville Independent School District closed 21 campuses on Monday, February 3:

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requires multiple water samples to be tested before the boil water notice can be rescinded. Pending the results of the water testing, the boil order could be lifted as early as 1 p.m. on Monday.
