Two teenagers were arrested in connection with an overnight graduation party incident that left several students from the Prosper Independent School District feeling sick, resulting in eight being sent to local hospitals.
Kyle Muchineuta, 17, of Prosper, and Cesar Omana, 18, of Frisco, were taken into custody without incident and booked into the Collin County Jail. Both face charges of manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, a first-degree felony under Texas Health and Safety Code Sec. 481.113.
Prosper police detectives secured arrest warrants for the suspects on May 21 after developing leads linking them to the medical emergencies that occurred in the early morning hours of May 17 at 3R’s Ranch, located in the 1600 block of Coit Road.
The incident took place during the annual “Graduation Celebration,” a longstanding, parent-organized, drug- and alcohol-free lock-in event for seniors from Prosper ISD’s three high schools. Held at an off-campus venue, the event began Friday evening, with students checking in at Prosper High School before being transported to the ranch.
According to the Town of Prosper, paramedics from Prosper, Celina, and Frisco responded around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, to reports of multiple individuals experiencing medical distress. Eight students were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Prosper ISD emphasized that the event was not hosted by the district nor held on district property.
In a statement on behalf of the Graduation Celebration organizers, the district said, “Several young adults experienced medical emergencies and required transport from the event. The Town of Prosper responded quickly, and Graduation Celebration ended early. All affected young adults are receiving appropriate medical care.”
Authorities have not disclosed the specific substance involved in the incident, but some parents speculate that THC gummies may be to blame.
“They’re saying it’s a medical emergency, but what is it?” said Jasmin Thomas, a parent whose child attended the event, per NBC 5 DFW. “We’re hearing from other people that they took an edible gummy. We’re just trying to figure out what it was.”
The Prosper Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
“Due to the nature of an ongoing investigation, we have no further information at this time,” said Prosper Police Department said in a statement.
The conditions of the hospitalized students have not been released.
