Forget Breckenridge and Vail, kids in Dallas can learn to snow ski right here in their own backyard, even during the summer.
Shredder Ski School, a franchise with roots in Boulder, Colorado, opened its first location in North Texas in 2024, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The school offers kids in the Dallas area the opportunity to learn skiing and snowboarding fundamentals without ever leaving the Metroplex.
“Learning to snowboard and ski is a process. Similar to other sports, practice is essential to short- and long-term success. Our professionally developed curriculum incorporates many leading practices into an innovative indoor ski hill experience that maximizes your family’s outdoor snow and sport adventures,” reads a description on Shredder’s website.
The curious operation was brought to Dallas-Fort Worth by Robert Lacey, a long-time skier and Vermont native. He says the project expands the world of skiing to a new group of children.
“I’m thrilled to launch a Shredder in Dallas, providing kids of diverse backgrounds the opportunity to experience skiing and snowboarding,” said Lacey in a company announcement.
To make the whole thing work, Shredder Ski School attempts to replicate the environment you might find on a traditional outdoor hill. The franchise then leverages industry-standard teachings to help guide children through the basics of skiing and snowboarding.
So far, the school has received a warm welcome. As of this writing, the North Texas location in Richardson has a five-star rating on Google, based on 20 reviews.
“We had a trial class followed by a private 4-session lessons, and it was an amazing experience! Coach Robert is fantastic—patient, skilled, and great with kids. My 3.5-year-old, who was skiing for the first time, absolutely loved it,” wrote one reviewer earlier this year.
“She had so much fun and is now super excited to hit the mountains after her lessons. Highly recommend this ski school for anyone looking to get their little ones started on the slopes!”
