North Texans can enjoy mild temperatures and partly sunny skies on Wednesday before a cold front moves through the area on Thursday, bringing the possibility of severe storms.

Temperatures on March 13 are expected to hit a high of about 80 degrees in the metroplex before dropping overnight.

“Some low rain and thunderstorm chances will return to parts of North and Central Texas [Wednesday]; otherwise, it will be partly to mostly cloudy, humid and mild [Wednesday night] with lows in the 60s,” the NWS website states.

On Thursday, temperatures will again warm to about 80 degrees before the cold front arrives. A strong cap of warm air will likely prevent storms from developing until the afternoon and evening on Thursday.

Strong to severe storms capable of producing large hail, locally heavy rain, and damaging winds are expected to arrive around the mid-afternoon hours Thursday and persist into the evening. Tornado development is possible, but the overall risk is low.

The area with the greatest potential for severe weather is expected near and east of the I-35 corridor by the evening hours.

“When we get into this time of year, we see severe weather threats arrive, and so this is just another one of those springtime storm systems with the potential for both the large hail and damaging winds,” said Matt Bishop, a meteorologist with the NWS in Fort Worth.

The chance of rain is about 80% on Thursday, dropping to 60% on Friday and 50% on Saturday, with skies clearing on Sunday. Temperatures will hit highs in the upper 60s and low 70s as the week draws to a close, with lows in the mid-50s.

Looking ahead to next week, skies will be mostly sunny, with slightly cooler high temperatures in the low 60s and overnight lows in the 40s for Monday and Tuesday.
