A new list from SmartAsset has ranked two Dallas suburbs among the safest in the country.
McKinney and Frisco both landed in the top ten spots in the United States in terms of safety. Frisco came in at No. 10, with McKinney taking the No. 9 spot on the list.
SmartAsset looked at hundreds of U.S. towns within a 45-minute driving distance of a major city. The report compared suburbs based on violent crime rates, property crime rates, drug overdoses, traffic deaths, and the percentage of residents who engage in “excessive drinking.” While crime rates were taken from city measurements, the other metrics were taken from county-level data.
“While costs are often a major factor for families deciding where to settle, safety is another important factor for quality of life. Many households are willing to pay a premium to be in a neighborhood they feel physically safe in, as valuable qualitative benefits may be at stake in establishing a sense of safety – particularly for families with children,” read the report.
For the second straight year, Lehi, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, secured the nation’s safest suburb, according to the publication.
“McKinney and Frisco ranked as 9th and 10th safest suburbs, respectively. Both located in Collins County, they have some of the lowest drug overdose death rates studywide, and also score particularly well for crime. In McKinney, the median monthly housing payment is $2,101, compared to a median household income of $120,273. In Frisco, the figures are slightly higher with median housing payments at $2,389 and household incomes at $146,158,” the report continued.
While some of the Big D’s suburbs may be getting accolades for safety, the same cannot be said about Dallas itself.
The Dallas Express recently reported that the crime gap between Downtown Dallas and Downtown Fort Worth remains sizable. In fact, in June 2025, Dallas recorded a crime score a full five times higher than Fort Worth.
