A 36-year-old man was arrested late Tuesday and charged with injury to a child after a 6-month-old baby girl was found dead in a car parked at Rockwall-Heath High School, police said.

Camerone Tyrone Leichman faces a second-degree felony charge of injury to a child, with bond yet to be set, according to the Rockwall Police Department.

Authorities responded to the school’s teacher and staff parking lot around 4:40 p.m. on August 26 after a report of an unconscious infant. The baby, found in a car seat, had a temperature of 107 degrees when medics arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Leichman, who had recently become the child’s caregiver, failed to drop her off at daycare after taking his common-law wife to work at the school. Investigators believe the infant remained in the vehicle for several hours while parked at the couple’s home on the 100 block of Sunfish Road before Leichman returned to pick up his wife.

An arrest warrant affidavit states, per Fox 4, “The probable cause arises from Leichman leaving a 6-month-old infant in a car seat in a vehicle for 8 hours unattended. The reckless conduct caused the death of the infant.”

Leichman was taken into custody just before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The investigation continues, with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services also conducting a probe. Police have not released further details about the case.
