With mere days left in city office, Betsy Price still took the opportunity to promote one of her favorite citywide activities for the last time as Fort Worth mayor.

The Fort Worth Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge returns for 2021 and is currently seeking participants of all ages.

“The @FtWorthLibrary Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge is one of my favorite activities of the year,” Price wrote in a June 3 Twitter post. “Go join the fun completing challenges, earning badges and tracking minutes read all summer long.”

The theme for the 2021 Summer Reading Challenge is “Tails and Tales,” which will feature animal and nature-themed reading challenges.

Readers who participate in the reading challenges can use an app to track their reading times and will have the opportunity to earn badges and prizes.

“Summer reading is fun for everyone and is even easier than ever with our Beanstack tracking program,” according to a statement on the Summer Reading Challenge’s website. “On a computer or on your smartphone, you can track your reading minutes, find new challenges around Fort Worth and earn your badges.”

The challenge is part of the city’s effort to combat the summer learning loss, coined “summer slide,” that some students may experience from the extended summer break from school, according to the Fort Worth Public Library Foundation.

The challenge is open all summer long and is scheduled to run through Aug. 28, according to the City of Fort Worth.
