Powerful winds swept through North Texas on Sunday, knocking out electricity for roughly 30,000 customers, triggering a temporary highway closure, toppling trees, and forcing the cancellation of a post-race concert at the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington.
A Wind Advisory stayed in place until 1 a.m. on Monday, while a Red Flag Warning for dry, gusty conditions and low humidity covered Dallas, Fort Worth, and surrounding areas until 9 p.m. Sunday. Utility crews responded to widespread outages caused by downed power lines and debris.
In Richland Hills, police responded to multiple reports of damaged lines and fallen trees, resulting in temporary lane closures on Baker Boulevard and Glenview Drive. Traffic signals were reportedly out on Baker Boulevard and Booth Calloway Road.
In Denton, officials briefly closed the northbound Interstate 35 East at Bonnie Brae Street near UNT after construction debris blew across the roadway. Denton police and fire crews said the lanes reopened by late afternoon with no injuries or crashes reported.
At the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington, organizers canceled the Good Ranchers Concert Series shows featuring T-Pain and DJ Disco Lines “due to high winds and an abundance of caution for guests, artists, and staff.” Holders of VIP concert upgrade tickets will be refunded.
The IndyCar race itself was moved up by one hour due to forecast high winds later in the day.
Six Flags Over Texas shut down at 7 p.m. because of the gusty conditions.
At the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, both incoming and outgoing flights were delayed due to the high winds.
