A 37-year-old sergeant with the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office died in an off-duty motorcycle crash over the weekend, leaving his family and coworkers devastated.
“We at Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected and tragic loss of one of our own,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media announcement.
Sgt. Daniel Van Huss started his career with the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office in 2009. Two years later, he became a deputy. He earned a promotion to corporal in 2013 and then was made sergeant later the same year.
On July 15, just a few days before the crash, Van Huss was bumped again to the rank of Sergeant II. He worked closely with the DEA Task Force and served in the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Investigations Division, and Street Crimes Unit.
He was pronounced dead Sunday morning after being critically injured in the motorcycle crash the night before.
“Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this time,” Kaufman County Sheriff Bryan W. Beavers said in the announcement.
Van Huss is survived by his wife and two daughters.
His mother-in-law wrote on Facebook:
“Daniel will be sorely missed. Our family has experienced a tremendous loss. Our hearts are broken. Thank you for the outpouring of love, prayers, texts, calls and visits with our family. Thank you in advance for allowing us to lean on you during this time. God has His mighty plan in place, even though we can’t see it at the moment. We have to just continue to take a step at a time believing in His good grace, mercy and love that He has for each of us.
“God has placed all of you in our life for a reason. My family and I are humbled and forever grateful for all of the love and support shown to us. We love each of you and covet your continued prayers. God has us. God is with us. So we will persevere and be strong in His mighty arms and seek His guidance in ALL things. Much love to all.”
