A house fire sent nine firefighters to the hospital in McKinney over Labor Day weekend.

Firefighters with the McKinney Fire Department responded to a burning house on Joshua Tree Trail on Saturday evening, according to a press release. The caller reported a fire in the master bedroom of the home, in southwest McKinney a block south of Gabe Nesbitt Park.

When responders arrived at the scene just after 9 p.m. on August 30, the home had “heavy smoke showing from the open front door,” according to the release. Firefighters launched an “aggressive interior attack” on the second floor.

“A firefighter became disoriented and low on air, prompting a ‘MAYDAY,’” the release reads. “Nearby crews quickly initiated a coordinated rescue and safely removed the firefighter from the structure.”

Nine firefighters sustained injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to overexertion, according to the department. All were treated at local hospitals and released by the following morning. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“We appreciate the prayers for our firefighters as they recover,” the release reads.

The Dallas Express reached out to the McKinney Fire Department and Fire Marshal, but did not hear back in time for publication.

The incident follows several major fires across North Texas this summer. In June, a six-alarm blaze displaced more than 800 residents at Fort Worth’s Cooper Apartments. Days later, a fire at Hulen Mall prompted evacuations.
