A White Settlement homeowner made a shocking discovery this past Sunday.
The White Settlement Police Department reported that it had responded to a call from an unnamed citizen at a home under renovation in the 9200 block of Lanham Street at 4:02 p.m. on December 31. The new homeowner was renovating the house when a “military-style hand grenade” was discovered in the home.
One image posted by the department showed the grenade resting within a kitchen drawer with other utensils, and another photo showed its deconstructed frame. Police called in the White Settlement Fire Department and the Fort Worth Fire Department out of an abundance of caution, blocking off nearby streets.
Investigators from the Fort Worth FD’s Arson and Bomb team found that the grenade did not contain any explosives and confiscated the frame.
Citizens commenting on the post presented a mixture of praise for the officer’s efforts and condemnation for requiring neighboring residents to leave their homes while the investigation was underway. One poster alleged that the police department was afraid of a training grenade.
However, the department stood by its actions, claiming there was no fear and that they had been acting per protocol.
“We notified the Fort Worth Fire Department per our protocols. Out of an abundance of caution we had neighbors evacuate the area,” said the White Settlement PD in response. “In the day and age we live in, that’s the right decision.”
