A man died Monday night after struggling with Irving police during a traffic stop for suspected drug possession, authorities reported.

The incident occurred near North Belt Line Road and Cross Country Trail shortly before 8 p.m. Irving police attempted to arrest the driver on narcotics possession charges when he resisted. A physical altercation ensued between the man and officers.

After the man was placed in handcuffs, officers noticed the man had sustained injuries. They transported him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead later that evening.

No officers were injured during the encounter.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the man’s identity. The nature of his injuries remains unclear pending autopsy results, which typically take several weeks to complete. The medical examiner will determine the official cause of death through autopsy.

The incident has prompted both a criminal investigation and an administrative one. In addition, the Dallas County Public Integrity Unit will conduct its own investigation.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the Irving Police Department has declined to release any further information about the incident at this time.
