A mother from the Granbury area is calling local firefighters who saved her young son “angels and heroes” after they rescued her child from a burning apartment complex early Sunday morning.

The tense moments were captured on body camera footage from the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department, showing the department’s efforts to save a 2-year-old from a smoke-filled apartment.

The fire began shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, breaking out in the Granbury complex. Phylicia Keen, a mother of two, told NBC 5 DFW she was jolted awake by the sound of shattering glass from the growing blaze.

With her 4-year-old son in tow, Keen managed to escape the apartment, but she was unable to reach her toddler, who was asleep in a back bedroom.  Within minutes of the emergency call, Granbury’s Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the scene, where one crew battled the flames and another focused on searching for the missing child, according to NBC.

The tense moments of the rescue, provided by the department’s body cameras, show firefighters raising a ladder to the second-story window and smashing it to gain access to the child soon after pulling the boy out of the window to safety.

The child was then flown to a Fort Worth hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. Thankfully, his condition is improving, and he is expected to be released within the next 24 hours, according to NBC.

Keen’s family home was destroyed in the fire, leaving them with little more than the clothes on their back.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation, but for now, Phylicia Keen’s focus is on her family’s recovery. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover immediate expenses, hospital bills, and the family’s overall road to rebuilding after the blaze.
