Prosper Police are investigating after eight high school seniors were hospitalized following a medical emergency at an off-campus overnight graduation party early Saturday, May 17.
The incident occurred during the annual Graduation Celebration for Prosper Independent School District seniors, held at 3R’s Ranch, 1695 North Coit Road. The event, a parent-organized, drug—and alcohol-free lock-in for seniors from all three Prosper ISD high schools, was scheduled from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday.
Around 2:15 a.m., Prosper ISD Police requested assistance, and paramedics from Prosper, Celina, and Frisco treated multiple students, transporting eight to local hospitals. The cause of the medical distress remains unclear, though some parents suspect THC gummies may be involved.
Jasmin Thomas, whose 18-year-old stepdaughter attended, recounted her daughter’s panicked call hours into the event: “She’s like, ‘Hey, can y’all come get me? I don’t know where I am. I think somebody laced something that I had,’” reported NBC 5 DFW.
Thomas, living five minutes away, found her daughter in distress.
“She’s just standing there, she’s throwing up, she’s choking on her own throw up,” Thomas said. “We could see other ambulances there for other students that had the same thing happening.”
Thomas’ daughter was released from a Frisco hospital Saturday but readmitted to a McKinney hospital Sunday after severe symptoms.
“When we realized she wasn’t breathing, it was time to call 911,” Thomas said, per NBC 5. “Her eyes were rolling in the back of her head. She wasn’t really, you know, responding.”
“I don’t wish this on any other parent,” Thomas said, urging parents to discuss drugs and alcohol with their teens. “Just leave it alone, don’t do it, it’s not worth it.”
Prosper ISD clarified that the event was not district-hosted or on district property.
A statement shared with parents read, “We wanted to relay information about the incident at Graduation Celebration. While we cannot provide specific details, several young adults experienced medical emergencies and required transport from the event. The Town of Prosper responded quickly, and Graduation Celebration ended early. All affected young adults are receiving appropriate medical care.”
A Prosper ISD Graduation Celebration Facebook post added, “The vast majority of the evening was filled with positive energy and the excitement of our graduating class. However, we also experienced an unforeseen situation. The safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority.”
Prosper Police offered no further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
Thomas expressed frustration over the lack of clarity: “They’re saying it’s a medical emergency, what is it? This is what happened, we don’t know what our kids took, and nobody is giving us answers.”
