Dallas-Fort Worth is one of the best cities in the country when it comes to access to coworking spaces.

With 279 coworking locations across the Metroplex in the third quarter of 2024, Dallas-Fort Worth sits only behind Los Angeles with the highest number of spots to work remotely. Compared to the same period in 2023, DFW has seen a 3% increase. Since July alone, the city has welcomed eight new coworking locations.

As previously reported in The Dallas Express, coworking spaces got their start nearly a decade ago with the opening of the San Francisco Coworking Space in 2005. Since then, the concept has exploded, especially as remote work has grown.

At one point, the industry saw the rapid ascent of the coworking chain WeWork, founded by Adam Newman. The company, fraught with controversy and profiled in the hit Apple mini-series “WeCrashed,” was once valued at a monumental $47 billion.

WeWork still maintains a network of offices, including multiple locations in Dallas, including 1920 McKinney Ave.

Coworking arrangements were soon given a boost by the COVID-19 pandemic. With traditional in-office arrangements upended for a period, some companies opted to return to in-person via coworking spaces.

In DFW, the average cost of a coworking membership in the third quarter was $150 per month, a drop from the $198 average just one quarter prior. Nationally, the average is also $150 monthly.

From a square-footage ranking, Dallas-Fort Worth ranks fifth in the United States. With 5.3 million square feet of coworking space, DFW sits behind Manhattan, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.

Zooming out, the total number of coworking spaces in the United States hit 7,538 in the third quarter of 2024, representing a 7% increase from Q2. Nashville witnessed the most significant growth of any major U.S. city, with 22 new spaces added, or a roughly 24% jump.
