Plano will soon join the ever-growing global infrastructure for electric vehicles.

SK Signet has placed a new electric vehicle manufacturing charger facility in Plano, Texas. The grand opening of the facility was announced on Sunday.

SK Signet is a South Korea-based global manufacturer of electric vehicle chargers, credited with creating products such as the first UL-certified ultra-fast charger in the nation.

This is the company’s first manufacturing facility in the United States and outside South Korea. It will produce these ultra-fast chargers.

Initially introduced at CES 2023, these chargers can charge an electric vehicle up to 80% power three minutes faster than previous iterations at just 15 minutes.

SK Signet CEO Jung Ho Shin said in a press release that he was “thrilled” to open the new facility in Plano.

“The opening of the SK Signet factory means new jobs for Texas and more chargers for American EV owners,” said Shin, according to SK Signet.

“We couldn’t have accomplished this without the close partnership of the State of Texas and the City of Plano,” he continued.

City officials were given a tour of this facility on June 5, where Mayor John B. Muns and Shin led a demonstration of the new V2 charger that the new facility will specialize in creating.

Muns said at the event that he was excited about the potential this facility could bring to the community.

“Their investment in our community represents a significant milestone that holds immense promise for our community and beyond,” said Muns.

“The company’s innovative technology and EV charging capabilities are remarkable and we are thrilled to be home to their first manufacturing facility in the United States,” he continued.

The Plano facility will also manufacture other chargers for commercial and public use and installations for gas stations and convenience stores.

SK Signet said in the press release that the facility would be able to produce 10,000 ultra-fast chargers annually and would create 183 jobs by 2026.

Governor Greg Abbott, who had previously welcomed Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s new lithium refinery in May, expressed his pride that the company chose Plano for its new location.

“The company’s new state-of-the-art facility will not only create new manufacturing jobs for hardworking Texans, but will advance critical EV infrastructure for our state and the nation,” said Abbott. “Thanks to innovative leaders like SK Signet, Texas is leading the way on future technology which will power the Texas of tomorrow.”
