A Johnson County deputy was injured, and a suspect was killed early Wednesday when gunfire broke out as first responders arrived at a structure fire, authorities said.
Johnson County deputies and local fire crews were called to a trailer home in the 5400 block of County Road 605 in Burleson shortly after 1 a.m., according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters reported shots fired at them upon arrival and requested assistance from deputies.
When deputies reached the scene, the suspect opened fire on them as well, striking one deputy, officials said. Deputies returned fire, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.
The injured deputy was hospitalized. Johnson County Chief Deputy James Saulter said the deputy was shot in the face, though it was unclear whether the injury resulted from a direct hit or shrapnel. The Texas Department of Public Safety described the injuries as minor. No other injuries were reported.
The incident remains under investigation and will be turned over to the Texas Rangers, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings that result in death, authorities said.
