Federal agents with the FBI Hostage Rescue Team ended a nearly 26-hour standoff early Wednesday morning in Providence Village, safely rescuing an adult woman and taking a suspect into custody without reported injuries to the hostage, the suspect, or law enforcement.
No injuries were reported to the hostage, the suspect, or law enforcement officers during the operation, per Fox 4 News.
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. Monday when Aubrey police responded to a deadly conduct call at a home in the 12100 block of Thoroughbred Drive in the Foree Ranch subdivision near Providence Village.
According to the Aubrey Police Department, the male caller told dispatchers he was holding two females hostage and warned that he had weapons and would shoot if officers approached the residence, reported NBC DFW.
The Aubrey Police Department provided updates as the situation stretched into Tuesday. Additionally, Aubrey Police Chief Richard Brooks provided public updates, noting that one juvenile female was released from the home around 1 a.m. Tuesday, which gave officers additional information that prompted the deployment of additional resources.
Negotiations continued throughout the day with support from the FBI’s hostage negotiation team and McKinney SWAT. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the neighborhood, and nearby schools implemented closures or modified operations due to the ongoing threat, per NBC DFW.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. On Wednesday, the FBI Hostage Rescue Team made entry into the residence using flashbangs. Agents safely extracted the remaining adult female hostage, who was taken to a hospital for evaluation of minor injuries, per KERA News. The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Michael David Miller of Aubrey, was taken into custody without incident.
Miller is being held in the Denton County Jail, facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated kidnapping using a hostage, burglary of a habitation, unlawful restraint, and violation of a bond or a protective order, per Denton Record-Chronicle.
Aubrey police, which provides law enforcement services for Providence Village, coordinated the multi-agency response. The standoff drew heavy law enforcement presence to the quiet residential neighborhood in eastern Denton County, located about 10 miles east of Denton and roughly 40 miles north of Dallas.
The standoff alledgely stemmed from a domestic relationship in which the suspect and the adult female victim knew each other. According to the victim’s family, FOX 4 reported that the suspect was her ex-boyfriend, and she had recently obtained a protective order against him following a history of domestic violence.
