The Allen Police Department on Wednesday released body camera video from the officer who shot and killed the suspect in the Allen Premium Outlets massacre on May 6.
The officer who confronted the shooter was the subject of a routine grand jury inquiry into the incident this week.
The Allen Police Department said in a news release that the grand jury’s vote not to indict the officer on Tuesday “indicates that the use of force was justified under Texas law.”
The officer, who has not been publicly identified, was near the mall when the shooting broke out, Allen police said previously.
Eight people were killed in the shooting, and seven others were wounded. The last person injured was released by a local hospital last week.
Allen police said the Texas Rangers and Collin County District Attorney’s Office presented evidence to a grand jury about the use of force.
“The Allen Police Department supports the grand jury process as an independent review of incidents involving the use of deadly force by police officers,” the press release states.
“After reviewing the facts of the investigation, the grand jury returned a ‘no bill,’ which indicates that the use of force was justified under Texas law.”
After the grand jury inquiry, the department decided to release the officer’s bodycam video, which shows the officer running to the scene and includes the sounds of repeated gunfire.
“This video shows how quickly a routine interaction with the public turned into a life-and-death situation,” Chief Harvey said.
“The officer recognized the danger, ran toward the gunfire, and neutralized the threat, and for his actions, the Allen community is forever grateful.”
The video was edited to blur out the faces of civilians and victims, and some language has been removed, Allen police said.
Chief Harvey said the department has requested a comprehensive and independent review of the incident by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
