LGBTQ organizations in Denton are hosting a “Big Gay Swim Day” on Sunday that will employ genderless changing rooms with no apparent age restriction.

Big Gay Swim Day” is being hosted by OUTreach Denton and PRIDENTON on June 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Pool, which is owned and operated by the City of Denton.

The announcement for the event informs potential attendees in the “What to Expect” section that “gendered changing rooms will be converted for the duration of the event.”

While the Civic Center Pool has separate changing rooms for men and women, the “Big Gay Swim Day” will allow people of both sexes to use either room during this event.

The event is also open to children, as its description advertises a “kids water play area.”

Kelly Neidert, president of the activist group Protect Texas Kids, argued to The Dallas Express, “The City of Denton should not be allowing their facility to be used for an event where men are allowed to use the same changing room as women and girls. This is extremely concerning and unsafe.”

“Organizers of this event intend to encourage biological men to use the same changing room as women and young girls,” claimed Brady Gray, a board member of the Texas Family Project, in an interview with the Texas Scorecard.

“This sort of activity should never be allowed but should certainly be prohibited on city-owned property,” Gray opined. “We call on the City of Denton to address this issue and ensure that children in attendance at this event are kept safe from perverts.”

Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth has addressed the event after “several people” expressed concerns about it to him.

“This is a private, after-hours rental of a City facility and the rental fee includes private use of the facility, lifeguard staff, and a pool manager,” Hudspeth said in a statement on social media.

Hudspeth said he expects “that the organizers will provide a safe and lawful event that follows our rental policy.”

The “Big Gay Swim Day” is free to attend but did require RSVPs and has since reached capacity.

PRIDENTON also told attendees not to bring “transphobia, homophobia, fatphobia, racism, [or] ableism” to the event.

“Body-shaming of any kind will not be tolerated and will result in removal from the party,” read the event announcement.

The Dallas Express reached out to both PRIDENTON and OUTreach Denton for comment but received no response from either by press time.
