A 13-year-old Sanger ISD student has died after a school bus overturned Thursday afternoon in unincorporated Denton County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety and the school district.
The crash happened around 4:55 p.m. on Huling Road near Lois Road East. DPS said troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash and determined during a preliminary investigation that the bus was traveling north when it left the roadway, struck a culvert, and rolled over.
The student was taken to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries.
DPS said the 38-year-old bus driver and three other students were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Sanger ISD said the bus was carrying the driver and four students when the crash occurred. The district said that no other students were injured.
“We are heartbroken to share that a Sanger ISD school bus was involved in a single-vehicle accident this afternoon,” the district said in a statement, per Fox 4 KDFW. “…Tragically, one student lost their life in the accident. No other students were injured.”
The district said it is working with law enforcement and emergency personnel and will provide additional information when it becomes available and is appropriate to release.
Sanger police and fire personnel responded to the crash, but DPS is leading the investigation. Officials have not released the name of the student who died or identified the school the student attended. The cause of the crash also has not been determined.
DPS said its investigation remains ongoing and additional information will be released when available.
State and local officials expressed condolences to the student’s family and the Sanger ISD community following the crash.
State Sen. Brent Hagenbuch said he was praying for the student’s family and the Sanger community and thanked first responders and DPS for handling the investigation.
State Sen. Tan Parker also expressed sympathy for the student’s family and others affected by the crash.
Sanger is about 55 miles north of Dallas.
