The City of Midland alerted the public last Tuesday that scammers impersonating City of Midland Customer Service Department employees are making fraudulent calls to residents.

The scammers tell the residents they have outstanding or unpaid balances with the Utilities Department, and their water service will be disconnected unless they promptly pay what they allegedly owe.

The callers are “spoofing” — that is, disguising — their phone number so that it appears on caller ID systems as the City of Midland Customer Service Department.

Reportedly, residents have received calls and voice messages in both English and Spanish.

According to the alert, the City of Midland will never request payment over the phone or request banking information. Officials warn the public not to divulge personal or financial information to unknown callers.

Utility customers can check their account balance by calling the City of Midland Customer Service Department directly at 432-685-7320.
