Trump: ‘America Has Always Been Guided By The Loving Hand Of God’

President Donald Trump issued a presidential message Thursday as U.S. Catholic bishops gathered in Orlando, Florida, to formally consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, marking the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary of independence.

The White House statement, released as the bishops performed the consecration during their spring plenary assembly, expressed the spiritual foundations of the American republic and drew parallels to historic acts of faith by previous Catholic leaders.

“Today, Melania and I join in prayer with Catholic Bishops gathered in Orlando, Florida, as they consecrate the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the occasion of our 250th year of American Independence—a powerful moment in our national story and a poignant reminder that America has always been guided by the loving hand of God,” Trump stated in the announcement.

The message recounted early American Catholic history, noting that “just years after the end of the Revolutionary War, Bishop John Carroll—the first Catholic bishop in the United States and cousin of Catholic Founding Father Charles Carroll—consecrated our young Republic to Mary, the Mother of God.”

It also connected the event to the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 12 and recalled the 1987 actions of President Ronald Reagan and Pope Saint John Paul II against communism.

“Today, as Catholic Bishops consecrate the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in this 250th year of our Independence, we recommit ourselves, like President Reagan and Pope Saint John Paul II, to defending our spiritual identity and great civilizational inheritance,” Trump added.

What This Means

The consecration is a formal prayer by the nation’s Catholic bishops asking for God’s blessing and protection on the United States. It recognizes the country’s founding principles — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — as gifts from the Creator, as referenced in the Declaration of Independence. The act does not change laws or policy but serves as a spiritual dedication of the nation during its semiquincentennial year.

Catholic involvement in American independence includes Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. Bishop John Carroll’s early consecration of the young republic to Mary set a precedent for invoking divine guidance. The current act revives this tradition nationwide for the 250th anniversary.

Catholic Leaders React on X

Catholic leaders and organizations widely welcomed the consecration and Trump’s message of support.

The official U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops posted:

“Today the U.S. bishops will consecrate the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, joined by parishes and faithful across the country. The act of consecration takes place as part of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.”

Lepanto Institute, a Catholic advocacy group, stated, in part:

“Trump joins his prayers with the U.S. bishops for the consecration of the U.S. to the Sacred Heart. Love him or hate him, this is an historic moment, and a source of abundant grace for our country. Regardless of the good or bad policies (both foreign and domestic) enacted under his leadership, the joining of his prayers with this consecration directly impacts the flow of grace to the entire nation. I just verified this – no other president in U.S. history has ever participated so directly in such an effort.”

Catholics for Catholics shared:

“Trump and Melania join in prayer as the USCCB consecrates the US to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the country’s 250th Anniversary. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us as a nation!”

These reactions reflect strong support among many Catholic voices for the joint spiritual effort between the bishops and the Trump administration during America’s semiquincentennial year.

Forward Impact and Broader Observance

The consecration follows a novena of prayer and precedes the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops approved the idea overwhelmingly in November 2025.

No specific public comments from Pope Leo XIV on this particular consecration were found in the immediate reporting, though the pontiff has previously encouraged devotion to the Sacred Heart.
