National Donut Day is bringing sweet deals and promotions on Friday, June 7.
The History of National Donut Day
The holiday dates back to World War I, specifically, in 1938 in Chicago, to honor a special group of women volunteers better known as the Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies, according to WFAA. In 1917, these women began baking sweet treats and offered other essential goods to soldiers in Europe on the frontlines of the battlefield, per the Salvation Army’s website.
However, serving these baked goods would become a challenge for the volunteers on the battlefield. With limited rations and the poor conditions of the volunteer huts, a solution was needed. Two officers – Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance – were the first to begin frying donuts, which quickly became a hit, as stated by the Salvation Army’s website.
When U.S. soldiers (often referred to as the “Doughboys”) returned from war, the “Donut Lassies” would offer the treat to soldiers, leading to the popularity of the sugary treat in the United States. The “Donut Lassies” served troops up to 9,000 donuts each day, as reported by Fox 4 KDFW.

Donut shops across the DFW area will offer various promotions and discounts to celebrate the beloved sugary treat.
Krispy Kreme Donuts
Customers who visit Krispy Kreme on National Donut Day will be able to choose their favorite flavored donut for free, with no purchase necessary. This promotion is limited to one donut per customer and is only available while supplies last, according to WFAA. Limited-time donuts will be excluded from the freebie offer. For those who want more of this sweet treat, a $2 glazed dozen will be offered for those who purchase a dozen at participating Krispy Kreme locations, per the company’s news release.
Dunkin’ Donuts
Dunkin’ Donuts will be offering a free classic donut for those who purchase any beverage while supplies last, per a news release issued by Dunkin’. The chain donut shop also stated that more announcements will be made on Thursday, June 6 as the company kicks off their celebration for the holiday.
Shipley Do-Nuts
In a post via X, Shipley Do-Nuts announced several promotions throughout June. For National Donut Day, the donut shop will offer a free glazed donut with any purchase while supplies last. The same promotion will run for the week of June 17, per the company’s post on X.
