From the fall of 2024, Houston will be home to a new surf destination which is now in the works as part of Generation Park.

Generation Park is a lifestyle and business destination in Houston and one of the fastest-growing residential and economic centers in the city. It features restaurants, retailers, and more.

The resort is coming from the Beach Street Development team, according to a Generation Park news release. Using pioneering technology from Wavegarden, a surf lagoon is being built that can generate waves resembling those in the ocean

Wavegarden’s Chief Commercial Officer, Fernando Odriozola, shared in the news release that the Houston location is great for the company’s vision.

“We are looking forward to seeing HTX Surf bring our Wavegarden Cove technology to Houston,” Odriozola said. “This is a special location for us as it is true to our vision of sharing great waves with everyone, everywhere in the world, specifically those who live far away from the ocean.”

HTX Surf will be capable of creating up to 1,000 waves every hour and will be accessible to beginners and professionals alike. The lagoon will cover six acres and will even feature a beach area for spectators, Generation Park stated.

Advanced and beginner surfers will be able to surf in different areas of the lagoons, and training programs will also be offered. It will be able to hold 70 surfers an hour.

Ryan McCord, the owner/developer of Generation Park and the president of McCord Development, shared that HTX Surf will become a unique location in the city.

“We’re thrilled to welcome this innovative, world-class surfing destination to Generation Park,” McCord said. “Such a unique amenity is a great asset for Houston and will attract a wide range of personalities–from professional surfers, amateur boarders, families, and corporate groups among others. The amenities and experiences at HTX Surf will rival a best day on the water, whether you’re an expert or new to the sport.”

In addition to the lagoon and beach area, guests will also have access to hot tubs, food and beverage venues, a swimming pool, and fire pits. There will also be a members-only private club.

Alex Bergman, a Beach Street Partner, suggested that the lagoon’s proximity to Bush Intercontinental Airport will make it a top destination for surfers from around the world.

“As a fast-growing, international destination, Houston continues to attract the investment of new industries and world-class leaders. Houston also has a large and thriving surf population, despite limited access to high-quality surf,” Bergman stated.

“We’re really excited to welcome Houston locals, as well as regional and international travelers to surf perfect waves and explore all that HTX Surf has to offer,” Bergman continued in the news release.

HTX Surf will feature an event lawn to be used for festivals, bands, or other live events. Members can include access to members-only areas, use discounts on amenities, take private member lessons, and more, according to Generation Park.

Beach Street Development has spent more than 40 years working on surf lagoon construction, surf resort operations, surf technology, project finance, and real estate development.

Construction for HTX Surf is expected to start in 2023.
